New Zealand Quartet: Summer Again                                Following the Adam Chamber Music Festival and Summer School in February, the New Zealand Quartet  return to North America in July to enjoy summer again. Switching hemispheres is a normal part of life for this globe-trotting quartet, which is giving residencies in Australia, debut concerts in Sweden and an exciting new collaborative project in Beijing.The festival engagements in the U.S. and Canada are packed around a week in the recording studio for Naxos records to start a new three-year Brahms project.
 
Aziz Shokhakimov -- the young award-winning conductor just made a stunning debut with the Pacific Symphony [Review]. Continuing his remarkable rise (including his Mahler Competition prize win at age 21), his upcoming debuts include: London Philharmonic, Frankfurt and Stuttgart Radio Orchestras, Orchestra Filarmonica del Teatro La Fenice, Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne, the Houston and Winnipeg Symphonies, Teatro Comunale di Bolgona (in Eugene Onegin), and a tour of Japan. Return engagements on the schedule include orchestras in Bremen, Warsaw, Milan, Bologna and Dusseldorf. More.

Chatham Baroque: Jefferson's Library is now in the concert hall. Thomas Jefferson (in addition to being our nation's third President) was an avid violinist and music-lover. The library in his beloved Monticello held a significant collection of music. Chatham Baroque's ingenious new program brings to the stage music found in Jefferson's library, including works of Corelli, Vivaldi, Handel, Purcell and more. Dali Quartet in New York - Making its New York debut, the Dalí Quartet performed at the Americas Society this spring, bringing to life the gorgeous “Angelica” by Venezuelan composer Efrain Amaya and “La Oración del Torero” of Joaquín Turina among other works by Latin composers. The concert paired the Dalí with Cuarteto Latinoamericano for the Shostakovich double quartet and Seresta by Francisco Mignone. More Info. The Dalí is enjoying a terrific first season on the Wentworth roster, with engagements from Toronto to Texas. The programming focus is on classical/romantic repertoire in tandem with Latin American classical and popular music -- "played with passion and precision". CD Release Concert in NYC: Latin Grammy winner Fernando Otero's new CD, Romance (Soundbrush Records) was celebrated in concert at 92YTribeca and called"a sensuous blend of tango and classical and chamber jazz" by the New York Times. Argentinean pianist and composer Otero won Best Classical Album award at the 11th annual Latin Grammy Awards for his 2010 CD, Vital, and was hailed by the BBC as “Urbane and exotic, surreal and street-wise, and alive with invention and emotion.”  Otero tours solo, duo, quartet and sextets. Video Samples including the hit "Until the Dawn" with Josefina Scaglione.



First Person: Seeing America Stage, film & television actors Rob Nagle, Lily Knight and Bill Pullman toured with Ensemble Galilei this season (Mr. Pullman did a fall tour while simultaneously filming his new television show!). Newly directed by Casey Stangl, First Person: Seeing America tells its story with photographs from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the words of famous Americans including James Agee, Frederick Douglass, Calamity Jane and Abraham Lincoln, poetry by Lucille Clifton, Jim Harrison and Ted Kooser, and music by Ensemble Galilei. Photographs from the Met's collection include the iconic works of Walker Evans, Edward Curtis, Ansel Adams and Arthur Rothstein as well as many others. The soundtrack is the music of Ensemble Galilei – traditional music from Sweden, Scotland and Ireland, and new compositions featuring fiddles, harp, viola da gamba, banjo, percussion and oboe.
