Crossroads Educational Outreach

The Fry Street Quartet collaborates with climate physicist and communicator, Dr. Robert Davies in Rising Tide: The Crossroads Project, an evocative performance about global sustainability that weaves art and science together through music, prose, and stunning visual imagery.

Rising Tide: The Crossroads Project performance incorporates large-screen projections of original works by painter Rebecca Allan, stunning immages by internationally recognized environmental photographer Garth Lenz, excellent graphics, and the new quartet by American composer Laura Kaminsky, titled Rising Tide — “some very intense music… each movement was a sonic picture” (ConcertoNet.com) — as well as segments of Haydn and Janacek.

Audiences throughout the country and beyond have been inspired by this candid, yet artistic response to one of the great challenges the world has ever known. The performance runs about 75 minutes, without pause, and we usually set up a talk-back or panel discussion with QA for/with the audience following a brief break. The program is supported by a significant website with strong material for audience follow-up.

Educational outreach components are available on tour, including workshops and gallery exhibits.

This remarkable quartet – hailed by the New York Times as “a triumph of ensemble playing” – is a multi-faceted ensemble taking music in new directions.

About the Fry Street Quartet: Touring music of the masters as well as exciting original works from visionary composers of our time, the Fry Street Quartet has perfected a “blend of technical precision and scorching spontaneity” (Strad). Since securing the Grand Prize at the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition, the quartet has reached audiences from Carnegie Hall to London, and Sarajevo to Jerusalem, exploring the medium of the string quartet and its life-affirming potential with “profound understanding…depth of expression, and stunning technical astuteness” (Deseret Morning News).

With a discography that includes a wide range of works from Haydn and Beethoven to Stravinsky, Janacek and Rorem, the quartet is known for being, “Equally at home in the classic repertoire of Mozart and Beethoven or contemporary music,” (Palm Beach Daily News).

The Fry Street Quartet made its Chautauqua debut in two August performances: Baritone Kelly Markgraff joined the FSQ in Barber’s Dover Beach, alongside Haydn Quartet Op.76 No.1 and Bartok Quartet #5. The quartet then partnered with Markgraff and mezzo soprano Sasha Cooke for Laura Kaminsky’s acclaimed chamber opera AS ONE. Opera America, the trade association for 150 professional opera companies, cites “As One” the most produced new opera in North America. The original cast will record AS ONE in 2018.
